Handle with Care – Student Workbook
Handle with Care is a creative and reflective student workbook designed to help Stage 4 students explore the theme of public and private identity. Aligned with the NSW Visual Arts Syllabus, this resource guides students through activities that encourage self-expression, critical thinking, and hands-on artmaking.
Students will investigate the contemporary artist Gillian Wearing, whose work explores how people present themselves to the world compared to who they are in private. Drawing inspiration from her practice, students will design and create their own cardboard letterbox sculpture as a metaphor for how they express themself publicly versus privately.
Key Features:
- Learning Intentions & Success Criteria: Dedicated space provided for students to write these out for each activity, helping them actively engage with the learning goals.
- Super Six Comprehension Strategies: Visual tiles appear on each relevant page to guide students in applying the strategies as they read and analyse artists.
- TEEL Paragraph Support: Includes clear scaffolds and sample responses to help students structure their writing effectively and reflect on their ideas with confidence.
- NESA Verbs: Activities are designed with NESA verbs so students understand the level of depth required and are prepared for assessment tasks.
- Creative Tasks: Step-by-step activities take students from exploring artist case studies to designing and constructing their cardboard letterbox sculpture, encouraging students to express both their public and private identity through art.
- Budget-Friendly Artmaking: Perfect for schools working within a tight budget, this unit makes use of recycled materials and cardboard as the primary artmaking materials, keeping costs low while encouraging sustainability and creativity.
Designed for Stage 4 Visual Arts students, Handle with Care will guide students through the journey of exploring their identity while developing both their creative and academic skills.
