Creating Without A Camera – Surreal Digital Artmaking Task

Challenge students to create a surreal digital artwork without using a camera, relying entirely on digital tools to manipulate, combine and construct an imaginative, dreamlike composition.

This two-page artmaking task guides students through the creative process, from researching digital Surrealist artists and developing ideas to constructing their final digital artwork. Students explore how artists such as Erik Johansson use digital manipulation, unexpected juxtapositions and transformation to challenge reality and create impossible worlds.

Students are encouraged to develop their own concepts, consider symbolism and explore how digital tools can be used to communicate imaginative or deeper spiritual ideas.
