PS S5.5 From Earth To Form Teacher Resource

From Earth to Form is a holistic teacher resource designed to guide educators through an exploration of ceramics, natural environments, sustainability and artistic practice. Aligned with the NSW Stage 5 Visual Arts syllabus, it complements the corresponding student workbook and provides a structured, scaffolded approach to developing hand-building, surface and three-dimensional artmaking skills.

This unit invites students to research a chosen ecosystem or natural environment and use their findings as conceptual and visual inspiration for a symbolic ceramic vessel. Students investigate natural forms, textures, patterns and structures before translating their observations into three-dimensional artworks. Through this process, students consider how the Artworld Concept of World influences artistic practice and how artworks can communicate ideas about environmental responsibility, connection and sustainability.

The featured artist is Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Vicki West. Students investigate how West’s cultural identity, ancestral knowledge and connection to Country influence her artistic practice. They explore how her use of materials, processes and natural forms communicates ideas about Country, sustainability, cultural continuity and the relationship between people and place.

Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Framework:

• I Do: Explicit teacher instruction on ceramic techniques, ecosystem research and the practice of Vicki West. Includes modelling of hand-building and conceptual planning.
• We Do: Collaborative investigations, demonstrations, discussions and practical experiments exploring natural textures, forms and environmental ideas.
• You Do: Independent research, VAPD development and ceramic artmaking where students design and create a vessel inspired by their chosen environment or ecosystem.

Art History & Criticism:

• Investigate the practice of Vicki West and her connection to Country.
• Explore how an artist's World can influence their materials, processes, subject matter and ideas.
• Investigate how contemporary and cultural art practices can communicate ideas about environment, identity and sustainability.
• Analyse how ceramic artists transform natural forms and textures into three-dimensional artworks.

• Use the Artworld Concepts of Artist, Artwork, Audience and World to investigate and develop meaning.
• Research environmental issues affecting ecosystems and consider how these can inspire artistic responses.

• Develop, refine and resolve a personal ceramic artwork supported by VAPD documentation.

From Earth to Form is more than a ceramics unit. It invites students to look closely at the natural world, investigate how artists are shaped by their World, and transform their observations and ideas into meaningful three-dimensional artworks. Through ceramics, environmental research and critical reflection, students are encouraged to consider how art can help us understand, appreciate and respond to the world around us.
