From Earth to Form – Student Workbook

Ceramics, ecosystems, creativity, and connection to the natural world

The From Earth to Form Student Workbook is a 10-week Visual Arts resource aligned with the NSW Stage 5 Visual Arts Syllabus, supporting students to explore ceramic practice through ecosystems, environmental perspectives, the work of Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Vicki West, and the transformation of natural forms into three-dimensional artworks.

Through this workbook, students will:

• Investigate a chosen ecosystem or natural environment, exploring its forms, textures, patterns, connections and environmental challenges as sources of artistic inspiration.
• Explore the practice of Vicki West, examining how her cultural identity, connection to Country, materials and environment influence her artistic practice and artworks.
• Develop their understanding of the Artworld Concept World, considering how artists respond to their environment, culture, experiences and the issues affecting the world around them.
• Create a symbolic ceramic vessel inspired by their chosen environment, translating natural forms, textures and ideas into a resolved three-dimensional artwork.
• Experiment with hand-building, construction and surface techniques to develop confidence and control with clay.
• Reflect on how artistic choices communicate meaning and how artworks can encourage audiences to think about environmental responsibility, sustainability and connection to place.

• NESA syllabus verbs to develop students' ability to describe, analyse and explain.
• Super 6 comprehension strategies to strengthen visual and written literacy.
• TEEL paragraph structures to scaffold artist studies, written analysis and extended responses.
• Integration of ICT tasks to support ecosystem research, visual research and multimodal learning.
• Learning Intentions and Success Criteria throughout the unit to make learning visible and encourage students to take ownership of their progress.
• VAPD scaffolding to support students in documenting research, experimentation, concept development, reflection and resolution.

Designed to reduce teacher workload while maximising student engagement, From Earth to Form develops both practical and conceptual skills through a combination of research, drawing, ceramics, critical thinking and reflection. Students are encouraged to investigate the natural world, consider how an artist's World influences their practice, and transform their observations and ideas into meaningful three-dimensional artworks through the artworld concepts of Artist, Artwork, Audience and World.
